Tay Thien, where Tay Luong Temple resides, is a unique historical-cultural complex. It sits among the majestic mountains and forests of Dai Dinh commune. This is in the Tam Dao district of Vinh Phuc province. Buddhist monuments combine with relics of the Mother of Nation Temple here.
Imagine King Hung Chieu Vuong visiting Tam Dao mountain. He saw the ancient Tay Thien Pagoda. It was a place of Buddhist worship. Legend says this was the first stop for a group from Buddha land India. Monks Sona and Uttara led this eighth group. Passing Van Lang’s ancient capital, they chose Thach Ban Mountain. Here, they spread Buddhism.
Since then, the mountain region was called Tay Thien. It means West sky. It is the place where Buddha and Buddhism were first found in Vietnam. From here, Buddhism grew widely. Archaeological evidence confirms that Tay Thien was a national center of Buddhism. This was during Buddhism’s peak in the country. Yen Tu pagoda was another key center.
The story of Hung Chieu Vuong does not end there. He admired Tam Dao’s scenery. It was said that gods often met here. The mountain had a small pagoda. Four letters read Ancient Tay Thien Pagoda. The king celebrated an incense offering for seven days and nights. Later, he met Mrs. Lang Thi Tieu. She was from Dong Lo village. He married her.
When enemies attacked the country, Dang Thi Tieu recruited soldiers. She helped the King save the country and its people. Together, they opened the border and unified the country. They taught the people to plant rice. They built a peaceful and prosperous nation.
After her death, she blessed and helped the kings. She helped them fight the enemy. She helped them defend the country. In the Le dynasty, she was ranked second after Tan Vien Mountain Saint. She was honored as Tam Dao Mountain Nation Mother. She became the supreme goddess of the Tam Dao range. She is the embodiment of the Supreme Mother. She is one of the Gods governing the universe.
In Thach Ban mountain, the temple is located with Tay Thien Pagoda. It is also called Upper Tay Thien Pagoda. The pagoda shows respect for the talented woman’s love and merit. Visitors often come here to offer incense. They pray for good luck in life.
