Overlooking Freiburg, the Taubenkopf isn’t just a forested peak. It’s a source of power, literally. The Taubenkopf stands at 880 meters tall on the Schauinsland’s northern flank. This wooded hill, south of Freiburg im Breisgau, is nestled between Bohrer to the west and Schauinsland to the east. Many hiking trails crisscross the area around the Taubenkopf. These paths lead towards Freiburg or up to Schauinsland’s summit. But the Taubenkopf holds a modern secret. Two wind turbines now call this peak home. They stand as a testament to Freiburg’s commitment to renewable energy. These turbines weren’t always there. Until recently, a 140-meter wind measurement mast dominated the skyline. It was a precursor to the turbines that now generate power for the city. The construction happened in three phases throughout 2024. First, the foundations were laid. Then, the towers were erected, and the gondolas and rotor blades installed. Finally, in autumn, the turbines whirred to life. The Taubenkopf turbines generate approximately 18.5 million kWh of green electricity annually. This powers around 5,500 Freiburg households. The project, financed partly by Sparkasse Freiburg, represents a partnership between the city and its residents. The Taubenkopf now stands as a symbol of Freiburg’s sustainable future. It’s a peak that powers a city.
