Ever heard of a dive site that looks like nothing special but teems with life? That’s Tasi Tolu Dive Site for you. Right here on the western edge of Dili near the airport, Tasi Tolu is more than just a shore dive. Its name comes from the three freshwater lakes just inland from the beach.

Now, I will tell you more about this unique spot.

Tasi Tolu is known as Timor-Leste’s most famous muck dive site. Divers often compare it to Lembeh Strait. Don’t let the unassuming appearance fool you. Tasi Tolu is a haven for macro lovers.

Imagine this: you kit up on the beach. Then, you walk towards the group of small boulders. Entering the water here is easy. The sandy bottom slopes gradually. Be careful to check your depth because it can get deep quickly.

As you descend to about 15 meters, a flat patch of marine growth appears. Here a wide variety of photogenic critters live. I’m talking seahorses, spiny tiger shrimps, and Tozeuma shrimps. Marianne Woodward from Dive Timor Lorosae showed me this spot. I would have missed it completely otherwise.

Tasi Tolu is especially interesting at night. Many burrowing crabs, crustaceans, and cephalopods come out to look for food. You might spot rhinopias, sea horses, frogfish, or harlequin ghost pipefish. Small octopuses and pink soft coral crabs also appear at night.

With a maximum depth of about 18 meters, Tasi Tolu suits all skill levels. The soft corals and sponges create a perfect home for many creatures. Mimic and blue ring octopuses reside here. Keep an eye out for Spanish dancers and ghost pipefish too. Cuttlefish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and various crabs and shrimps also call this place home.

If you are lucky, you might even spot a dugong. They love the abundance of seagrass in the area. A night dive at Tasi Tolu could reveal coconut octopuses and bobtail squids.

Tasi Tolu is easily accessible from the shore, just 15-20 minutes from Dili’s center. Turn right onto a dirt track after passing the airport road. You can park your car close to the water. Entry is easy due to the gradual sandy slope.

So, if you are ready for a dive full of surprises, Tasi Tolu Dive Site awaits.
