Can you imagine a place where you can explore the underwater world without getting wet? Here at the Taraporewala Aquarium, we invite you to do just that! Right here on Marine Drive, the Taraporewala Aquarium first opened its doors in 1951. It was a gift to the city from a generous Parsi philanthropist, Mr. D.B. Taraporewala. His donation of ₹200,000, a fortune in those days, made this aquatic dream a reality. Today, the Taraporewala Aquarium stands as India’s oldest aquarium, a testament to both marine life and human generosity. It pulsates with the energy of over 400 aquatic species. From the darting Damselfish and the vibrantly patterned Butterflyfish to the majestic Grouper and the intriguing Moray Eel, they’re all here! Don’t miss the playful Clownfish darting in and out of anemones or the graceful rays gliding through the water. Before its grand reopening in 2015, the aquarium underwent a major renovation. This included the installation of a mesmerizing 12-foot long acrylic glass tunnel, a portal to a world teeming with marine life. Imagine being enveloped by marine life as you stroll through this tunnel, mesmerized by the vibrant colors and graceful movements of hundreds of fish. Look closely and you might even spot some of the aquarium’s newer residents. After your journey through the underwater world, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of Mr. Taraporewala. His vision continues to educate and inspire, reminding us of the beauty and diversity of our natural world.
