Imagine, dikes built near the water where people dwell. That’s the essence of Tangxi’s name. It’s a town steeped in history and cradled by waterways.

Tangxi, in Hangzhou, isn’t just another ancient town. It is a place where time seems to slow. Established during the Northern Song Dynasty, over a thousand years ago, Tangxi was once a small fishing village.

The Grand Canal shaped Tangxi’s destiny. During the Yuan Dynasty, Zhang Shicheng broadened the canal, inviting fishermen to settle along its banks. These settlements gradually transformed into the town we see today. Tangxi flourished becoming a key water gateway to Hangzhou. Its infrastructure grew over five centuries.

In the late 19th century, Tangxi earned a prestigious title. It was recognized as the finest of the top ten famous towns south of the Yangtze River. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tangxi ranked first among Jiangnan’s famous towns.

The Guangji Bridge stands as a testament to Tangxi’s enduring legacy. Built in 1498, this seven-arched stone bridge is the only one of its kind on the Grand Canal. Imagine the bustling scene. Merchants and travelers crossing this bridge for centuries. The Guangji Bridge is 78.7 meters long. It is 5.2 meters wide and 13.86 meters high.

Emperor Qianlong also left his mark on Tangxi. The Qianlong Stele commemorates his gratitude to Zhejiang for paying grain tax during a natural disaster. In 1751, he reduced land tax and poll tax. The emperor built the stele to inform the people of his decision. The stele features intricate carvings and tells a story of imperial benevolence.

Tangxi is also known for its natural beauty. Nearby Chaoshan Mountain offers stunning views of plum blossoms. These plum blossoms are considered special. They are old, wide, and rare. Chaoshan Mountain is one of the top three places to view plum blossoms in Jiangnan.

Two ancient plum trees stand out. The Tang Plum Tree, said to be over a thousand years old, is believed to be the incarnation of a fairy. The Song Plum Tree once stood in front of the hall of Great Brightness, but has since died.

The plum blossoms of Chaoshan Mountain are also rare. They have six petals instead of five.

No visit to Tangxi is complete without savoring the local cuisine. Cì máo ròuyuán, meatballs with glutinous rice, is a local favorite. Legend says that this dish was invented for the Qianlong Emperor.

Tangxi also has intangible cultural heritage. Sericulture silk weaving skills are included in the world intangible cultural heritage list.

The town has nurtured notable residents. Wu Changshuo, a renowned artist, loved the plum blossoms of Chaoshan Mountain. Feng Zikai, another celebrated figure, also called Tangxi home.

Today, Tangxi is a national 4A-level scenic area. It attracts millions of tourists every year, and has become a new hot spot of ancient town tourism in the Yangtze River delta.
