Have you ever felt the warm sand between your toes at sunset? Welcome to Tangalooma. Right here on Moreton Island’s western beach you stand on ground steeped in history. Tangalooma wasn’t always a vibrant resort. It began as a whaling station.

For a decade from 1952 to 1962 Tangalooma’s shores witnessed the tragic hunt of humpback whales. Imagine the scene. The air thick with the smell of the sea and whale oil. The sounds of machinery echoing across the bay. Over 6000 whales were harvested. The whaling station employed 140 people. Their livelihoods depended on the hunt. However this unsustainable practice decimated the local humpback whale population from an estimated 10000 to just 500. The impact was devastating.

The ban on whale hunting in 1963 marked a turning point for Tangalooma. The whaling station closed. The resort was then built. A new chapter began. Tangalooma transformed into a haven for wildlife and tourists. Today it’s famous for something completely different.

Here at Tangalooma you can witness the nightly dolphin feeding. Every sunset up to eleven bottlenose dolphins swim to the shore. They interact with guests under the careful supervision of Eco Rangers. This unique event balances tourism with conservation. It highlights Tangalooma’s commitment to responsible practices. It’s a magical experience.

Tangalooma’s transformation goes beyond the dolphins. Fifteen ships were deliberately sunk creating an artificial reef. This underwater haven supports a thriving ecosystem. Divers and snorkelers explore these wrecks. They encounter vibrant marine life. The wrecks themselves are part of Tangalooma’s fascinating story.

Tangalooma also boasts a beautiful beach. Lonely Planet even named it the best beach in the world for nature viewing in 2024. The white sand the clear blue water and the calm bay. These combine to make Tangalooma a truly special place.

From whaling station to world-renowned resort Tangalooma’s journey is captivating. It showcases the delicate balance between nature conservation and responsible tourism. As you leave Tangalooma remember its rich past. Cherish the present wonder. This unique island offers a blend of history and unforgettable experiences.
