Locals say a visit to Tan Thanh is incomplete without trying this unique crustacean. From the tenth to the second month of the lunar calendar, female horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay their eggs. Local hunters gather them at night, a scene both fascinating and slightly eerie under the moonlit sky. Outside of these months, horseshoe crabs dwell in the deep sea, accessible only to divers. While the crab itself is a delicacy, their eggs are also prized for their unique flavor. Even more intriguingly, locals mix the horseshoe crab’s white blood with rice wine to create a traditional drink. When the tide is high, basket boat rides are available. These boats will take you to the stilt houses dotting the sea, where locals cultivate clams. Climb up into one of those houses for a unique perspective of the vast ocean. In the evening, you can even glimpse the twinkling lights of Vung Tau Town in the distance. For a truly immersive experience, spend the night in one of the simple bungalows lining the beach. Lit by electric or oil lamps, these bungalows offer a unique kind of charm. Behind the bungalows lies a verdant forest where the wind whistles throughout the night, a lullaby that’s both soothing and a bit haunting. If you’re an early riser, walk onto the pier for a quiet sunrise. The 300-meter long pier offers unparalleled views of the dawning sky and the tranquil beach.
