Tan An Ward

On the Vàm Cử Tây River, a vital artery of the Mekong Delta, lies Tan An Ward. This ward is a part of Tan An City, the bustling capital of Long An Province. Tan An Ward isn’t just another administrative division. It’s a place steeped in history, echoing with the whispers of bygone eras. Tan An, as a whole, became a city in 2009. But its story begins long before that. In the 18th century, Tan An marked the end of the Bảo Định Canal. This canal facilitated the growth of commerce along the river. This made the area an important hub in the burgeoning Mekong Delta trade. The Nguyễn Dynasty consolidated its control over the Delta in 1800. Tan An itself was briefly a provincial capital. It was established by French colonists in 1889. Later, it became part of Long An Province in 1956. Tan An Ward played a critical role during the Vietnam War. It served as the headquarters for the 3rd Brigade of the US 9th Infantry Division. The division was strategically positioned in the southernmost part of the Delta. The presence of Tan An air base further underscored the ward’s military importance during this tumultuous period. This base supported helicopters and medium-sized prop planes. It played a vital role in the logistical operations of the 9th Infantry. In 1970, the base was handed over to the South Vietnamese Army, marking a turning point in the war’s progression. Tan An Ward, and Tan An City as a whole, stand as testaments to Vietnam’s resilience and adaptability. From a small trading post, it has grown into a significant urban center. It remains a key economic gateway to the Mekong River Delta.
