Built between 1911 and 1914 the Talsperre Euba stands before you. A marvel of engineering this curved gravity dam is made of rubble masonry. It follows the Intze principle. This isn’t just any dam. It was constructed to supply water to the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard. Think of it steam locomotives chugging along needing a constant supply of water. The Talsperre Euba ensured that. The stones for the dam came from a nearby quarry later called the Eibsee. A field railway transported them to the dam site. A testament to early 20th-century ingenuity the dam is a protected monument.

The Talsperre Euba isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s also a unique climbing spot. Drill holes in the back wall make it perfect for sport climbing. This unusual use for a dam demonstrates the adaptability of the structure. Many climbers have enjoyed the challenge.

Today the Talsperre Euba is only partially filled with water. It’s no longer used for water supply. Swimming fishing and other recreational activities are prohibited. Despite the ban people still enjoy the area in their own way. This speaks to its enduring appeal as a place for outdoor recreation.

In 2008 a group called “Rettet die Talsperre Euba! e V” was formed. Its goal is to save the dam from decay. The group wants to restore it as a recreational area for the people of Euba Chemnitz and surrounding communities. It highlights the ongoing effort to preserve this piece of history.

The dam’s history also has its dramatic moments. In June 2013 heavy rainfall filled the reservoir to its overflow. The bottom outlet refused to open. This resulted in the need for three above ground discharge lines to lower the water level. The level decreased by two centimeters an hour. It highlights the engineering challenges and the unforeseen consequences of extreme weather events.

This wasn’t the first time the dam faced challenges. The city of Chemnitz put the land containing the dam up for sale. In 2012 the city sold it to an investor for 18500 Euros. This reveals the economic and political realities that shaped the dam’s fate.

The Talsperre Euba is more than just a dam. It represents ingenuity perseverance and the ongoing struggle to preserve history in a changing world. It’s a story of engineering ambition and community involvement.
