Did those shops always look like that? Talbot Mall might seem unassuming now, but it wasn’t always this way. Opened in 1979 as the Irish Life Mall, it was part of a grand vision. It sprawled between Talbot Street, Northumberland Square and Abbey Street, connecting them in a flow of commerce. Sadly, the years weren’t kind to Talbot Mall. Many shops emptied, leaving behind a ghost of its former glory. It became more of a shortcut for pedestrians than a shopping destination. There were attempts to revive it. In 2013, it got a new coat of paint and a new name – Talbot Mall. But even that couldn’t recapture the magic. By 2021, plans were approved for its final transformation. The once vibrant Talbot Mall is being replaced by a supermarket. The passage it provided, a link between streets, will be gone.
