These trees, known as “tal” in Bengali, became a defining feature of this area, lending it a unique identity. Taltala was once a haven for Bihari Muslim khalasis and lascars. These hardworking individuals formed the backbone of the community, contributing to its rich cultural tapestry. Imagine the scene in 1758. The British East India Company, fresh from their victory at the Battle of Plassey, began constructing the new Fort William. The inhabitants of Gobindapur, the original site, were displaced. They were given new homes in Taltala, Kumortuli, and Shovabazar. This marked a turning point in Taltala’s history. The area became a melting pot of cultures, with people from different backgrounds coming together to build new lives. Taltala witnessed the opulent zamindari era, a time of both grandeur and oppression. The British police and the zamindars often inflicted hardship on the lascars. These lascars were the working class of that time, and their struggles became a part of Taltala’s story. While predominantly Muslim, Taltala also welcomed Hindu settlers, including Durga Charan Banerjee, father of the prominent figure Surendranath Banerjee. This mix of communities added to the area’s diversity. Today, Taltala stands as a testament to resilience and coexistence. The area’s Urdu-speaking Muslim population, which makes up a significant portion of the community, preserves the linguistic heritage of the area.
