Across the tranquil Katsura River in Kyoto, the Takeyamachi Bridge gracefully arches. It’s a picturesque scene, but our story begins with a moon, an emperor, and a bridge bathed in moonlight. Emperor Kameyama, during a moonlit boat trip, was so captivated by the moon’s reflection on the water that he declared it looked as though the moon itself was crossing the bridge. This poetic observation gave birth to the name Togetsukyo, meaning “Moon Crossing Bridge.” While Takeyamachi Bridge shares the same Katsura River location with the famed Togetsukyo Bridge, their stories are distinct. Togetsukyo Bridge, however, is a concrete structure masquerading as a wooden one. Only the parapets are truly cypress, while concrete reinforces the beams and columns. This modern engineering allows it to withstand the river’s currents and the passage of time. The bridge is a hub of activity, with rickshaws shuttling back and forth, evoking a sense of old Japan. Shops at the bridge’s foot offer souvenirs and local treats. During the summer nights, cormorant fishing takes place near the bridge, adding to its allure. In spring, the mountain slopes south of the bridge bloom with cherry blossoms, transforming the landscape into a sea of pink. Autumn paints the foliage in fiery reds and golds, while winter blankets the scene in a serene white, reminiscent of an ink painting. Takeyamachi Bridge offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle, a place where one can appreciate the beauty of nature and the echoes of history.
