Right here within the Taj Mahal complex on the west side near the main entrance lies a museum. It is a double-storied building with a quadrangular projection outside the center. It was established in 1906 by Lord Curzon. It was modernized in 1982 by Khan Bahadur Hassan.
Inside the Taj Mahal Museum you will find three galleries apart from the main hall. They showcase a collection of artifacts. These connect to the construction of the Taj Mahal and the Mughal era.
Let’s start in the main hall. An interesting manuscript of Chehel Majlis is showcased here. It dates back to 1612. It bears the signature of Emperor Shah Jahan. Royal farmans and documents also find their place here. See two paintings of the Taj Mahal by British artist Daniel sketched in 1795. A world map shows the origins of stones used in the Taj Mahal. You can view specimens of these stones.
In the first gallery you can admire calligraphic art. It displays specimens from famous calligraphers. Admire jade and porcelain objects. See a beautiful ornamented vase carved of jade. Marvel at swords and daggers.
The second gallery displays paintings of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. A painting from the Persian epic Shah Nama of Firdausi is also displayed. You can see miniature paintings of Emperor Jahangir and other royal family members.
The third gallery showcases plans and color drawings of the Taj Mahal’s architecture. The site plan and front elevation provide interesting details. Replicas of gold and silver coins minted in Akbarabad are also on display.
The Taj Mahal Museum is open every day except Friday. It welcomes visitors from 9 am to 5 pm. Entry is free with the Taj Mahal ticket. It costs 20 INR for Indians and 750 INR for foreign tourists.
