Did you know that Taisho Ward once housed Osaka’s main civilian airport? A bustling hub of activity it was. Taisho Ward isn’t just a modern Osaka neighborhood. It holds a fascinating past. Originally a small collection of just three houses. Taisho was transformed through centuries of reclamation and innovation. Imagine the ambitious pioneers who filled in the marshland. They created new rice fields. They transformed this watery delta into fertile land. This paved the way for Taisho’s remarkable growth.

This area’s strategic location at the intersection of rivers proved invaluable. Water transport boomed. Ships and boats ferried rice fish and commercial goods. Taisho quickly became a vibrant port. This prosperity attracted forward-thinking entrepreneurs. One such visionary was Eiichi Shibusawa. He established Osaka Bouseki. This was Japan’s first spinning company. Located right here in Taisho.

Osaka Bouseki wasn’t just any factory. It was a symbol of Japan’s industrial revolution. The plant introduced cutting-edge technology. This included steam engines and night shifts. It even used innovative filament lamps. This was decades before it was commonplace. Imagine the wonder of those early electric lights. It illuminated the night work. Local residents would even flock to witness this marvel. They called the plant the ‘Nightless Plant’. A testament to its industrious nature.

Taisho’s innovative spirit extended beyond textiles. General Motors chose Taisho for its Asian manufacturing base. This was in 1927. The Tsurumachi plant assembled thousands of Chevrolets. This is a surprising fact. These cars weren’t entirely made in Taisho. The plant employed ‘complete knock-down production’. All components were imported from the US. They were only assembled in Taisho. It revealed the gap in industrialization between America and Japan at the time.

Even the skies above Taisho buzzed with activity. Kizugawa Airport served as Osaka’s primary airport. It started as a seaplane base in 1923. It expanded to support land-based flights. This airport even introduced Japan’s first ‘Air Girls’. These cabin attendants. They served passengers in traditional Kimono. A unique blend of tradition and aviation. Sadly Kizugawa closed. It was replaced by Itami Airport in 1939.

Today Taisho Ward continues to embrace innovation. Companies like Kobata Gauge thrive here. They represent the area’s enduring spirit of creativity and enterprise. The legacy of pioneers continues in this unique Osaka ward. A place where past and present converge in a captivating blend of history and progress. Taisho Ward a hidden gem of Osaka.
