Picture the Thousand-Island Lake shimmering before you. This isn’t just any lake. It’s the heart of Tai Lam Country Park Hong Kong’s second largest country park. Imagine the scale. 5412 hectares of land stretching from Tsuen Wan to Tuen Mun. This vast expanse wasn’t always so lush.

Tai Lam Country Park wasn’t always a paradise of hiking trails and tranquil waters. After World War II Hong Kong faced a severe water shortage. In 1952 construction began on Tai Lam Chung Reservoir the first reservoir built in Hong Kong after the war. This wasn’t a small undertaking. The main dam towered 150 feet above the lake a monumental concrete structure for its time. Pipelines snaked across the Kowloon Peninsula connecting to the territory-wide water supply.

The surrounding land was poor and prone to wildfires. To stabilize the catchment area afforestation began in 1952. Many plant species were cultivated. This was a crucial step in transforming a barren landscape. The result is the stunning biodiversity we see today. Tai Lam Chung Reservoir is now known as Thousand-Island Lake because of the many islets created when the valley was flooded. These islands are the park’s iconic feature.

Tai Lam Country Park is not only a stunning natural area. It’s also a rich tapestry of history. The area has a legacy of mining. Near Route Twisk old tungsten mines remain. These abandoned pits are a reminder of a bygone boom time. The area also contains seven reservoirs and settlement basins. These include the impressive Tai Lam Chung Reservoir and the picturesque Ho Pui Reservoir.

The park boasts twelve hiking trails. Some are family-friendly like the Twisk Nature Trail. Others like the MacLehose Trail offer challenging climbs with breathtaking views. These trails are not only scenic. They also trace old footpaths once crucial for connecting the villages of Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan. The area was once home to seven Hakka villages. Today only two remain. The abandoned villages stand as silent witnesses to the park’s evolution.

Tai Lam Country Park’s story is one of transformation. From a water-scarce region to a thriving ecosystem. From a land scarred by mining to a haven of natural beauty. It is a place where nature reclaims its space and where history echoes in every trail. Tai Lam Country Park awaits you. Explore its many trails. Discover its hidden gems. And experience the magic of the Thousand-Island Lake for yourself.
