Taereung’s presence emanates power. Here at Taereung Royal Tomb we stand before the final resting place of Queen Munjeong. She was the third consort of King Jungjong. He was the 11th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty.

Queen Munjeong was no ordinary royal. She was known for her intelligence. She also had political acumen. Her interest in Buddhism was well known too. She served as regent for her son King Myeongjong. She ruled from behind the scenes for eight years. He was too young to rule.

Queen Munjeong lifted the ban on Buddhism during her rule. She also gave land to normal citizens. This land was once owned by nobility.

Taereung was completed in 1563. It is one of the most well-preserved royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. The tomb attests to the architectural skills of the time. It is an important cultural asset of South Korea. Taereung has been preserved without damage for nearly 500 years. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in June 2009. Look at the red gate before us. It is known as hongsalmun. The red color denotes holiness. Note the taegeuk symbol. That is the yin-yang symbol. See the stone paths leading to the sacrificial building. There are two paths. The elevated path was for the dead queen. The lower one was for the living people.

Memorial rites were performed in the sacrificial building. Small sculptures of animals adorn the roof. They are called japsang. People believed they exorcised evil spirits. Sculptures of sheep tigers and horses surround the tomb. Military officers stand guard too.

Queen Munjeong was interred here in 1565. Memorial rites are held for her every year on May 16.
