“The reservoir’s history is intertwined with the very heart of Chiang Mai University,” I began, my voice carrying across the tranquil expanse of Tad Chompoo Reservoir. “Many believe this serene body of water is simply a natural part of the landscape. But they would be mistaken.” Pausing for effect, I let my gaze sweep over the attentive faces of the group. “Tad Chompoo Reservoir is not a product of nature alone. Its existence is a testament to the vision and determination of the very people who built this esteemed university.” I gestured to the majestic Doi Suthep Mountain, her slopes rising gracefully in the distance. “You see, back in the early 1960s, the founding committee, led by Professor M.L. Pin Malakul, envisioned a university that thrived in harmony with its natural surroundings. They understood the importance of self-sufficiency. A reservoir, they decided, would not only serve the practical needs of the burgeoning campus, but would also become a source of serene beauty.” I pointed towards a cluster of buildings nestled amongst the trees. “Professor M.L. Pin himself, a man who believed in experiencing the lay of the land firsthand, scouted potential locations. His explorations led him to the confluence of two life-giving creeks: Huay Keaw and Huay Ku Khao, both flowing down from the embrace of Doi Suthep. This, he realized, was the ideal spot for their vision to take shape.” Taking a deep breath, I continued, “The year 1962 saw the commencement of the reservoir’s construction. Imagine the tireless efforts, the dedication of those involved in transforming this patch of land into the tranquil oasis before you!” I let the silence hang for a moment, allowing the weight of the endeavor to sink in. “Interestingly,” I added, “the Royal Irrigation Department initially christened it ‘Huay Kaew Reservoir.’ But Professor M.L. Pin, a man with a penchant for poetic simplicity, renamed it ‘Ang Kaew.’ A name that resonated with the local community and stuck through the years, eventually evolving into the ‘Tad Chompoo Reservoir’ we know today.”
