Slipping through time, imagine 1992. The Tabunok Flyover rose, Cebu’s pioneering overpass. Now, let’s fast forward. Picture yourself here in 2017. Traffic snarls. The air crackles with anticipation. The Tabunok Flyover, this vital artery of Cebu City, is about to undergo a much-needed facelift. This isn’t just a story about concrete and steel. It’s a tale of a city’s growth, its challenges, and its resilience. The Tabunok Flyover stands as a testament to Cebu’s progress. It has witnessed the city’s transformation, the ebb and flow of its people, the constant hum of its development. But time takes its toll. The flyover’s expansion joints groan, the asphalt whispers tales of wear and tear. Repair is essential. Starting March 18, brace yourselves. The Tabunok Flyover will be closed for 24 hours on March 18-19 for the first phase of repairs. Imagine the scene: workers toiling around the clock, stripping away the old asphalt, preparing the flyover for its renewal. This first phase focuses on scouring and waterproofing. The second phase, retrofitting the expansion joints, will follow shortly after. Initially, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) planned a 48-day rehabilitation with nightly closures. However, City of Talisay Traffic Operations Development Authority (CT-TODA) advocated for full-day closures for safety. Mayor Eduardo Gullas and CT-TODA head Almond Dela Peña worked with DPWH to condense the first phase into two days of continuous work. They’re hoping for good weather. The price tag? A cool P8 million. But the cost of progress is often measured in more than just pesos. Consider the disruption, the rerouting, the temporary inconvenience. Southbound buses from Cebu South Bus Terminal will be diverted through Mambaling to the South Road Properties (SRP), exiting at Barangay Lawaan. Northbound buses will also use the SRP. The underpass, sadly, isn’t designed for buses. While the Tabunok Flyover undergoes its transformation, the city will adapt. Motorists are encouraged to explore alternative routes like the South Coastal Road. Public utility vehicles can navigate the underpass. This temporary disruption holds a promise. A revitalized Tabunok Flyover, ready to serve the city for years to come. So, as you stand before this structure, remember. It’s more than just a flyover. It is a symbol of Cebu City’s enduring spirit.
