Hidden within the municipality of Guimarães lies Tabuadelo a place steeped in history. Tabuadelo wasn’t always just a small village. Once it was a thriving freguesia a parish with its own distinct identity. Its area spanned 3.09 square kilometers a modest size yet home to over 1500 residents in 2011. The heart of Tabuadelo beat within its Igreja Velha de São Cipriano a centuries-old church. This old church stood as a testament to the faith and resilience of the people. Sadly much of its history remains shrouded in mystery. We know its patron saint was São Cipriano a name echoing through time. The church itself however isn’t the only historical landmark. In 2013 Tabuadelo’s existence as an independent parish came to an end. It was merged with São Faustino to form União das Freguesias de Tabuadelo e São Faustino. This merging while sad represents a common pattern in Portuguese administrative history. A new chapter began for Tabuadelo yet the memories of its past remain.
