Can a church be both a cornerstone and a ship? At Tabernacle Church in Houston, it seems so. This church, located at 6801 Westover Street, has weathered storms and climbed mountains since its founding in 1973 by Dr. D.G. Burgs, Sr. Initially, eighty-eight believers gathered at Walls Chapel AME Church, holding services in various locations like Hope Lutheran Church’s gymnasium. The vision was clear: to build a family-oriented Christian outreach, ministering to Southeast Houston and spreading the Gospel. In 1974, the current building became their home, a testament to their faith. Tabernacle Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a “Center for caring”. It has housed a medical unit, provided childcare, and even offered residency for the homeless in the Lydia Pittman Fellowship Hall. A “Meal Ministry,” started in 1991, provided meals and support to those in need, gaining recognition on local news. The church has also prioritized youth, sponsoring educational trips and establishing the Lizzie Berry Butler Scholarship Fund in 1993. Tabernacle Church also birthed a Hispanic church, Gran Tabernaculo de Houston, in 2004, and Tabernacle Fellowship Church in Pearland in 2005. After Dr. Burgs, Sr.’s passing in 2011, his son, Pastor D.G. Burgs, Jr., continued the legacy. Tabernacle Church continues its voyage, inviting everyone aboard.
