In a city known for its vibrant musical heritage, the Tabernacle Church in Algiers Point offers a unique melody. This church, also known as the First Baptist Church of Algiers, resonates with a history far different from your typical house of worship. The Tabernacle Church wasn’t always a place of hymns and sermons. Its story begins in the early 1900s, in the golden age of silent films and vaudeville. Originally called the “Folly Theater,” later “Philip Foto’s Folly,” it opened its doors in 1915. Imagine the flicker of black and white images on the screen, the lively energy of vaudeville acts, and the laughter of the audience echoing through the very space where the church now stands. This building witnessed the evolution of entertainment, hosting not just movies and stage shows, but also important civic events. The Folly held a magnificent 12-rank, 2 manual Tellers and Kent theatre pipe organ, filling the space with rich, resonant tones. The theatrical era eventually faded, and the Folly’s days of entertainment came to an end in the 1950s. The grand pipe organ was removed, making way for a new chapter in the building’s life. The Folly Theater transformed into the Tabernacle Church, its stage now a pulpit, its screen a backdrop for sermons, the echoes of laughter replaced by the harmonies of hymns. Though the pipe organ is gone, the spirit of performance, of community gathering, continues to resonate within the walls of the Tabernacle Church. It serves as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of a space, its ability to adapt and serve its community in new and meaningful ways.
