From humble beginnings in a Houston Street storefront Tabernacle Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Founded on May 10 1917 under the leadership of Dr. C.H. Young this Atlanta institution quickly outgrew its initial space. Within six months the congregation relocated to a larger building on Bell and Gilmer Streets.

Tragedy struck in 1937 when a devastating fire destroyed the church building. Undeterred Dr. J.J. Minor who became pastor in 1933 opened his home for services. His unwavering faith and dedication fostered a resilient spirit within the congregation. They rebuilt their first unit in 1939. That same year they acquired a corner lot on Ellis and Hilliard Streets. Rev. J.T. Dorsey presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. A new church was completed in 1940. The first service was held in March 1940.

The church continued to grow under Dr. Minor’s leadership until his passing in 1954. Dr. E.H. Dorsey from Brooklyn New York took the helm in 1955. His tenure profoundly impacted the church and community. The church purchased its current edifice at 475 Boulevard in 1960. This period also saw the establishment of the Happy Time Day Care Center. The church further expanded its outreach acquiring a house on Rankin Street a parking lot and an apartment complex on Parkway Drive. Operation Bread Basket a program to feed the hungry was also initiated. Dr. Dorsey retired in 1977 due to illness.

Dr. Quincy Lavell Carswell served as pastor from 1977 to 1992. His leadership brought significant renovations and structural reorganization. Modern musical equipment an advanced public address system and a media ministry were introduced. Community outreach educational and recreational programs flourished. Additional properties on Rankin Place were purchased.

Rev. Dennis A. Meredith from Toledo Ohio became pastor in 1994. Under his guidance the church experienced remarkable growth and development. He tailored programs and ministries to address the needs of the urban community. A key focus was fostering African-American male leadership in family church and community. His outreach ministry led to the founding of the Beacon of Hope in 1996. Currently he’s working on building the City of Tabernacle a project aiming to provide economic development and a safe haven for the Old Fourth Ward and greater Atlanta community.
