Listen closely as we approach the hidden gem of Angkor, Ta Noreay Temple. This temple offers a unique glimpse into the past. Ta Noreay is not just another stop on the tourist trail. It is a sanctuary of tranquility.

Ta Noreay Temple was built in the late 12th century. King Jayavarman VII was responsible for it. He was a prolific builder. Ta Nei shares a similar style with Ta Som. It reflects the Bayon architectural style and was dedicated to Buddha. King Indravarman II enlarged Ta Noreay Temple in the 13th century.

Imagine French explorers stumbling upon this site in the late 18th century. The early 19th century saw initial clearing efforts. Over time, nature has reclaimed much of Ta Noreay. This gives it a special atmosphere.

Ta Noreay Temple faces east like other temples of that time. King Indravarman II added three small gopuras. These were on the north, south, and west. He began an outer wall, but it was never completed. Today, only two of the small gopuras are still visible.

Originally, the urban enclosure stretched 190 meters. Inside, you would have found two long narrow moats. They were on the north and south sides. A small library stood near the south side. It connected the sanctuary to the north gopura.

Now, much of the original structure lies in ruins. This allows for an adventurous exploration. Wander through the nooks and crannies of Ta Noreay. Envision the layout and design of the temple in its prime.

Laterite was used to build the galleries. Sandstone was used for towers and other structures. A weather station stands in the temple court to observe climate conditions.

Ta Noreay is a romantic temple. It is not crowded like Ta Prohm. Here, you can listen to the sounds of animals instead of tourists. Ta Noreay offers a rare chance to experience Angkor. It allows you to explore ancient temple ruins hidden in the jungle. It is easy to imagine what it must have been like.

Ta Noreay Temple is not as heavily decorated as other temples. Yet, Apsaras and pediment carvings remain in good condition. See the north pediment. It shows a person on a boat giving a blessing. Flying figures carry parasols. A kneeling figure blesses children inside a palace. See a horseman wielding a sword on the north-west gopuram.

Ta Noreay, the hidden temple, lets us reflect on the passage of time. As you explore this site, consider the rise and fall of empires. Imagine the dedication required to create such a place.
