This magnificent structure, Geneva’s largest synagogue, wouldn’t exist without his vision and generosity. Hekhal Haness, meaning “miracle gathering place,” truly lives up to its name. Completed in 1972, this modernist marvel, crafted from concrete, stands as a testament to Gaon’s commitment to his faith. The Hekhal Haness Synagogue serves the Orthodox Jewish community, primarily those of Sephardi traditions. Its unique architecture is striking. The main sanctuary can hold 300 worshippers. For special events, a movable wall expands the space to accommodate up to 850 people. The synagogue also has a women’s gallery overlooking the main prayer area. Imagine the High Holidays, when the Hekhal Haness Synagogue swells to its full capacity of 1,200 people. The energy must be palpable. Even on a regular Shabbat, 300 to 400 people gather here for services. Daily prayers draw a smaller, but no less dedicated, group of 30 to 40 individuals. Tragically, in 2007, the Hekhal Haness Synagogue was targeted in an arson attack. The entrance was destroyed, but thankfully, the main prayer hall and the Torah scrolls were spared. This resilience, this ability to withstand adversity, speaks to the strength of the community that calls this place home. The Hekhal Haness Synagogue is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub, offering a mikveh, a library, a gym, and various other facilities. It’s a place where people gather not only to pray, but also to connect, learn, and celebrate.
