A community’s shared journey. That’s the story etched into the very bricks of Synagogue B-nai Israel. This isn’t just a building it’s a testament to resilience faith and the enduring power of community.

Before us stands Synagogue B-nai Israel a vibrant hub of Jewish life in Oakdale New York. Its story begins not with grand architecture but with a simple letter. On May 16 1964 a call went out. A meeting was announced at the American Legion Hall. The purpose to discuss the creation of a new temple. A new home for the growing Jewish community of East Islip.

From a humble start in a leased store on West Main Street the congregation of B-nai Israel flourished. They moved to the Knights of Columbus Hall. This served as their sanctuary and religious school until 1970. That year marked a significant milestone. The dedication of their own building on Idle Hour Boulevard.

Rabbi Steven Moss joined B-nai Israel in 1972. He became the temple’s first ordained rabbi. The congregation grew rapidly from 23 families to over 300. Their services expanded to accommodate this growth. Dowling College even lent classrooms for their religious school.

Then came a generous gift. Four acres of land on Oakdale-Bohemia Road were donated. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the current temple complex took place in 1983. The dedication followed in 1984.

Today Synagogue B-nai Israel stands as a symbol of enduring faith. It boasts a sanctuary social hall religious school library and community spaces. There’s even a permanent Sukkah a meditation garden and a playground. All testament to the congregation’s journey and vision. Each stone speaks of the shared efforts prayers and celebrations that built this community.

This building is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living history. A story of dedication growth and the enduring spirit of a community. A community that transformed a simple letter into a lasting legacy. A legacy that continues to inspire. A legacy that you witness today.
