The imposing Rykestrasse Synagogue stands before us. Its neo-Romanesque facade speaks of a rich history. A history etched in brick and stone. A history of faith resilience and survival.

This magnificent structure is more than just a place of worship. It is the Rykestrasse Synagogue. Berlin’s largest synagogue. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Berlin. Built in 1904 it was designed by Johann Hoeniger. Its completion marked a significant moment. It addressed the growing need for additional synagogues. The city expanded into new neighbourhoods. This new space accommodated the increasing Jewish population.

The Rykestrasse Synagogue wasn’t just a building. It became a vibrant hub for Jewish life. It hosted services weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. It also served as a site for learning with a religious school housed in the adjoining building. Even during World War I it opened its doors. It welcomed Jewish Russian prisoners of war for services on the High Holidays.

The Nazi era cast a dark shadow. The November Pogrom in 1938 brought destruction. The interior was vandalized. Amazingly it escaped the flames. Its location amidst residential buildings prevented a fire. The Nazis confiscated the building in 1940. They converted it into a stable and warehouse.

After World War II the synagogue was in ruins. Despite immense challenges it was reopened in 1953. It became a beacon of hope in a divided city. It served as the sole functioning synagogue in East Berlin during the Cold War. It even bore the name Friedenstempel Temple of Peace for a time.

Extensive renovations were carried out between 2004 and 2007. The Rykestrasse Synagogue was restored to its former glory. Today it is the largest synagogue in Germany. Its interior seats 1074 people. It is a place of great beauty and profound historical significance. The story of the Rykestrasse Synagogue is one of resilience. It’s a story of faith in the face of adversity. It’s a story of community that endured. A story we are privileged to share right here. A story that echoes in the very stones beneath our feet.
