Feel the cool sand beneath your feet. Welcome to the Neve Shalom Synagogue in Paramaribo.

This isn’t just any synagogue. Neve Shalom is the heart of Suriname’s Jewish community. It stands as a testament to centuries of faith perseverance. The original structure was built way back in 1719 by Ashkenazi Jews. It was rebuilt and expanded to its current magnificent size between 1835 and 1837.

Notice the beautiful woodwork. The Aron Kodesh the Bimah and the benches are all crafted from exquisite wood. See those Torahs? Some are hundreds of years old. They whisper stories of generations past.

That sandy floor though. It’s unique. It’s more than just a design choice. The sand is a poignant reminder. It symbolizes the Hebrews’ 40 years in the desert. It also recalls the Inquisition’s dark days. Marranos secret practitioners of Judaism during those dangerous times muffled their prayers on sandy cellar floors.

Neve Shalom is more than just a synagogue. The compound also includes the Mahmad a community center where the community gathers after services. There is also the Shamash. It serves as a small museum and a library. You’ll also find the 148-year-old Mikvah the old Rabbi’s house and 18th-century gravestones from the old Sephardic cemetery.
