Behold Symphony in Red a vibrant testament to art and engineering. This isn’t just a sculpture it’s a landmark a point of reference in Hanover’s bustling heart. John Henry created this masterpiece. He envisioned a work that would not only stand out but also interact with its environment.
Symphony in Red occupies the central reservation of Königsworther Platz. Five multi-lane roads converge here creating a constant symphony of noise and motion. The sculpture itself mirrors this chaos. Overlapping steel rods cast onto the ground like giant Mikado sticks. They reflect the city’s dynamic energy. Yet they also possess a remarkable stillness a quiet strength that holds its own against the surrounding urban clamor.
Imagine the sheer scale of this creation. It stands almost 17 meters high 18 meters wide. It weighs a staggering 13.5 tons. Its construction was no small feat. It took two years of planning and approvals. Neptun Stahlbauwerke in Rostock a subsidiary of the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg constructed it. They used high-quality steel sponsored by Salzgitter AG. Continental AG another local business also contributed. The static calculations alone filled 200 pages. Heavy foundations were sunk where the sculpture meets the ground.
The vibrant red color wasn’t always so intense. Weather and pollution had taken their toll over the years. In 2019 the city commissioned a restoration. The sculpture was carefully cleaned repaired and repainted in its signature high-gloss red. A sealant was then applied to protect it. The whole process cost around 14000 euros.
Symphony in Red is more than just steel and paint. It’s a symbol of collaboration a testament to the power of art to transform a busy intersection into a place of contemplation. It’s the final piece of the Sculpture Mile a project begun by Robert Simon in 1986. This stunning sculpture a permanent loan from the Niedersächsische Lottostiftung is a permanent reminder of the city’s artistic spirit and its enduring legacy. Stand here awhile let the energy of the city wash over you and appreciate the stunning beauty of Symphony in Red.
