Beneath the Georgia sun stands Sylvester Baptist Church. It is a testament to faith and community. This church has deep roots in Atlanta’s history. Its story is intertwined with the Sylvester Cemetery. It is also linked with the families who shaped this area.

Sylvester Baptist Church began with the Terry family. Around 1838, they established a family plot. It was a final resting place on their land. In 1873, a church was built nearby. It was on land adjacent to the Terry family. This church eventually became Sylvester Baptist Church.

Mary Jane Terry played a crucial role. She sold land for the original meeting house. The condition was that it be named after her son Sylvester. He had died young. This act of remembrance gave the church its name.

In October 1883, a small group gathered. They met at the Sylvester Meeting House. They organized a Baptist congregation. Because of the church’s name, Sylvester Baptist Church was a fitting choice.

The congregation quickly outgrew its meetinghouse. In 1887, a new church was erected across the street. A story in the Atlanta Constitution described it as large and elegant. It was a credit to the community. The Ladies’ Aid Society worked hard to raise funds. They wanted to complete the work.

The new wooden two story building was dedicated on July 17, 1887. A large crowd attended. The church could comfortably seat 300 people. Instead of benches, it had elegant individual chairs. The ceiling was painted pale blue. A handsome belfry held a bell. It called people to worship. The church cost $1000. Much of the labor was donated.

The old meetinghouse remained standing. It was used for various purposes. It stood until the 1950s. Then it was torn down. The land was joined to the cemetery property.

Sylvester Baptist Church is closely linked to the Sylvester Cemetery. Many church members were buried there. The church was often called the Sylvester Church Cemetery. However, the church did not own the cemetery.

Today, Sylvester Baptist Church continues to be a place of worship. It is a symbol of faith and community. It stands as a reminder of the families who built it. These families include the Terrys, McWilliams, and Warrens. Their legacy lives on in the church’s history.

The church’s story includes Fiddlin’ John Carson. He is buried in the adjacent cemetery. He was the Father of Country and Western Music. He had the first country music record. He also had his own radio program in 1923.

Sylvester Baptist Church has seen changes over the years. It has remained a constant in the community. It reflects the enduring power of faith and fellowship. The church’s history is a testament to those who built and maintained it. Their dedication has created a lasting legacy.
