Perhaps you’ve heard the story of Aimee Semple McPherson? It deeply influenced the birth of the Foursquare Church. I want to tell you the captivating story of Sycamore Park Foursquare Church.
Sycamore Park Foursquare Church is part of a larger movement. This movement started with a visionary woman named Aimee Semple McPherson. She founded the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in 1923. The headquarters is right here in Los Angeles.
McPherson’s vision began in Oakland California. It was October 1922 when she preached about the Foursquare Gospel. This “Full Gospel” concept defined her ministry. McPherson had previously been part of the Assemblies of God.
The Foursquare Gospel has four aspects. They represent the four facets of Jesus Christ. These are Savior Baptizer with the Holy Spirit Healer and Soon and Coming King. This vision led to the establishment of the first Foursquare Church.
That first church was founded in January 1923. It was located in Los Angeles. The Angelus Temple was dedicated in Echo Park. It could seat 5300 people. McPherson’s beliefs transcended denominational boundaries. Her services became a megachurch attracting 10000 people. McPherson was a celebrity. She participated in weekly Sunday parades. These went through the streets of Los Angeles.
After McPherson’s death in 1944 her son Rolf K McPherson took over. He led the church for 44 years. The Foursquare Church helped form the Pentecostal Fellowship of North America in 1948. This was in Des Moines Iowa. It united with other groups. These included the Assemblies of God and the Church of God.
In 1968 the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa broke away. This split led to a new association. It comprised autonomous Charismatic Evangelical churches. John R Holland became the church’s third president in 1988. He served until 1997. Paul C Risser followed.
Under Risser’s leadership the church sold KFSG-FM. It was a Los Angeles radio station. The sale occurred in 2003 for $250 million. Later controversial investments led to Risser’s resignation in 2004. Jack W Hayford became president in 2004. He helped stabilize the church.
By 2022 the Foursquare Church had grown significantly. It included 67500 churches. Membership reached 8.8 million across 150 countries. In the United States there were over 320000 members in 2010. They worshipped in 1823 churches.
The Foursquare Church has a Declaration of Faith. Aimee Semple McPherson compiled it. The church believes in the Bible’s inspiration. It affirms the Trinity. It believes in Jesus Christ’s deity. The church emphasizes salvation through faith. It also values the Holy Spirit’s baptism.
Divine healing is also a key belief. The church anticipates Christ’s premillennial return. It practices baptism by immersion and Holy Communion.
The Foursquare Church’s structure is unique. It has an “episcopal character”. The Foursquare Convention is its decision-making body. It includes officers and ministers. A board of directors manages the church’s activities.
Local churches operate under international bylaws. They can be “charter member” or “covenant member” churches.
Six colleges in North America are affiliated with the Foursquare Church. These include Life Pacific University in San Dimas California.
