Picture this. You are standing in Konstanz a city straddling the border with Switzerland. The air hums with the energy of a bustling town. Yet a quiet history unfolds before you. A history intertwined with Switzerland’s past.

Konstanz is more than just a lakeside town. Its story is one of trade religion and war. It’s a place where the echoes of the Council of Constance still resonate. This council a pivotal moment in church history took place from 1414 to 1418. Over 400 high-ranking church officials gathered here. Kings and princes came to Konstanz. They were drawn by its strategic location on trade routes. The lake provided ample fish. The town easily sustained a massive influx of visitors.

Konstanz’s population was around 6000. But during the council the city swelled to over 70000. Imagine the chaos the overflowing inns the bustling markets. Think about the brothels that sprang up to accommodate the masses. The council ultimately resulted in the resignation of three popes. A new pope Pope Martin V was elected. Sadly the reformers Jan Hus and Hieronymus of Prague were executed. They were burned at the stake.

Konstanz was chosen because of its location. This location made it accessible. The town’s ability to feed the visitors was vital. The most important decision of the council was made in a merchant’s trading house. This house on the lakeshore was later known as the Konzil or council building. It now hosts meetings seminars and a restaurant.

After the Council of Constance Konstanz supported the Reformation. This support did not last. During the Counter-Reformation Konstanz fell to hostile forces. It became part of the Hapsburg provinces in Austria. For a time Konstanz played a defensive role. It was used to block Swiss expansion. The Napoleonic Wars brought more hardship. French revolutionary troops occupied the city. Napoleon occupied it during his campaigns. This occupation led to Konstanz falling under the control of the German state of Baden. Later it became part of Baden-Württemberg.

Konstanz became an industrial center. It manufactured weapons and conducted research in radar components. Amazingly it survived World War II unscathed. The Swiss border with Kreuzlingen runs right through Konstanz. The city kept its lights on at night. This unusual tactic masked the border with Switzerland. It saved Konstanz from Allied bombing raids. The proximity to Switzerland has shaped Konstanz’s history. Its modern identity is woven into the fabric of this border city.
