Swirles Court is more than just accommodation. It represents Girton College’s commitment to expanding its graduate school. The complex is named after Dr Bertha Swirles. She was an influential mathematician and physicist and also a Girton alumna.

Let’s step inside Swirles Court. Imagine modern single rooms, each with its own en-suite study bedroom. Kitchen facilities are shared between four to eight students, fostering a sense of community.

Sustainability is at the heart of Swirles Court. High-efficiency heating is used. It is fed from a district heating network. High levels of insulation and triple glazing keep the building energy efficient.

The complex boasts several green features. Efficient showers, taps, and toilets conserve water. Roof-mounted PV panels generate electricity. Sustainable urban drainage minimizes the impact on the local drainage network.

Swirles Court comprises four buildings. They range from three to five floors in height. Green courtyards surround them. Lifts provide access to the upper floors. Adapted rooms are available for students needing level access.

The Porters’ Lodge offers 24/7 support. It controls access for non-residents. Laundry facilities are conveniently located on the same floor. Secure post boxes are provided for each resident. A room for study and socializing is available. It has network points. Wi-Fi is available throughout the site. Card access ensures building security. There is ample secure cycle parking.

Swirles Court officially opened on October 14, 2017. Professor Stephen J Toope, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Susan J Smith, Mistress of Girton College, unveiled a special plaque. The event marked Girton’s pioneering step in establishing a college presence in Eddington.

Girton is known for its pioneering spirit. It was the first Cambridge College to establish a base in Eddington. The location of Swirles Court is central to Eddington. It is a new University community. Eddington is part of the University’s expansion towards the north and west of Cambridge.

Girton students residing at Swirles Court enjoy full college membership. They have access to all the facilities at the main college site. This includes the Dining Hall, Social Hub, swimming pool, tennis courts, gyms, and library.

Swirles Court’s design was by architects R H Partnership. It is part of the University of Cambridge’s North West Cambridge Development. This development meets high levels of sustainability.
