“Adventure-seekers unite.” That’s what I imagine the first explorers of Swing Cave shouted. Today we explore a hidden gem the Hummingbird Trail Secret Cave Swing. It is the perfect mini-adventure for the whole family.
Located in the hills above Simi Valley the Hummingbird Trail takes you through a canyon. This canyon has lush greenery stunning rock formations and panoramic views. The best part of this hike is the hidden Swing Cave. It is tucked away at the end of the trail.
Now you might be thinking “A hidden cave and swing? That sounds too good to be true.” But I promise you it’s real. The Swing Cave is nestled in a small canyon off the main trail. It’s a bit of a scramble to get there. Once you reach it you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing oasis.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better there’s also a super cool secret swing just outside the Swing Cave entrance. The swing is made from a repurposed surfboard. It hangs from a tree branch. This allows you to soar over the canyon while taking in the awe-inspiring views.
Is this hike suitable for kids? Absolutely. While the Hummingbird Trail is rated moderate to difficult because of some steep sections and loose terrain it’s doable for older kids who are up for a little adventure. They’ll love exploring the Swing Cave and swinging like a monkey on the secret swing.
Ready for an unforgettable day of hiking and swinging? Grab your family pack some snacks and head to the Hummingbird Trail. It’s about a 3-mile round-trip hike. It should take 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Don’t forget to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water and your sense of adventure.
The Hummingbird Trail offers a stunning hike through the sparse Rocky Peak landscape near Simi Valley. If you follow the right path it will lead you to a peak with a swing hidden inside a colorful graffitied cave. This trail isn’t for the faint-hearted though. While it’s only a 4-mile loop it involves a continuous incline and some rock scrambling. This can be both challenging and dangerous. Once you get to the Swing Cave though you’ll see why it’s absolutely worth it for those sweeping views. You also get to rest your legs while you enjoy the swing.
Prime seasons tend to be between October and May. There’s little to no shade available so summer days can be brutal. Bring enough water regardless of when you decide to go. It’s quite a workout. At certain times of the year you’ll also get to enjoy wildflowers along the route.
Your workout begins at Hummingbird Trail. Follow signs to get to the Swing Cave. You can take a side trail called the Grunge Trail. Exit to the swing. You’ll need to use ropes to go down though. Once you make your way back to Grunge Trail you will land up on Rocky Peak Trail then back to Hummingbird Trail.
This graffitied Swing Cave is a popular spot because of the incredible views. Plan your trip for the early mornings when there are fewer people. There are plenty of other caves and routes to explore if you prefer quieter spots with beautiful rock formations. Be aware that it’s not easy terrain to traverse which makes it a perfect place for more experienced hikers to explore “off-piste”. You’ll find lots of mountain bikers and dog owners in the area too.
Remember to take everything you came with back with you. This place is a hidden gem so please make sure to take your trash with you and leave the area better than you found it. Have fun exploring the Swing Cave.
