“What if I told you that this serene lake has a history of engineering marvels and catastrophic floods?” Here at Sweetwater Reservoir, we’re standing on the edge of a story etched in stone and shaped by water.
Sweetwater Reservoir is a 960-acre artificial lake. It lies in the heart of San Diego County. This reservoir was formed by the Sweetwater Dam on the Sweetwater River. The dam’s construction finished in 1888.
In the late 19th century, San Diego faced a water crisis. The region’s semiarid climate meant seasonal floods and droughts. Frank A. Kimball envisioned a solution. He proposed a dam on the Sweetwater River in 1869. The river flowed through a narrow gorge, making it ideal for a reservoir.
Construction began in 1886. Workers laid a large stone-and-cement block for the dam’s foundation. During construction, the Sweetwater River was diverted. It flowed underneath the foundation through a masonry culvert. As the dam rose, engineers considered the original design unstable. They increased the dam’s height to 60 feet. They also thickened its base.
Local stone was used for the dam. It came from a quarry downstream. The stone was metamorphic and iron-rich. Workers deemed it excellent for construction. Horses and mules hauled stone to the site. Derricks lifted stone and cement into place. On April 7, 1888, the dam was completed. It stood 90 feet above its foundations. The Sweetwater Dam was considered an engineering marvel. Thousands attended the dedication ceremony.
But the story of Sweetwater Reservoir doesn’t end there. Mother Nature had more in store. In 1895, heavy rains caused the river to rise. The reservoir overtopped the dam for 40 hours. This caused severe damage. In 1910, work began to raise the dam to 110 feet.
Then came 1916. Southern California faced a severe drought. San Diego hired Charles Hatfield, “the Rainmaker.” Soon after Hatfield’s arrival, massive floods struck. The Sweetwater River surged. It reached a peak flow of 45,500 cubic feet per second. The reservoir overtopped the dam. The river breached the dam’s north abutment. The dam partially failed. This caused extensive damage downstream.
The Sweetwater Dam was rebuilt. In 1939 and 1940, the dam received a major overhaul. The dam came under the ownership of the Sweetwater Authority. Today, Sweetwater Reservoir serves multiple purposes. It provides flood control and water storage. It also offers recreation. The area surrounding the reservoir is home to diverse species. These include the least Bell’s vireo and the California gnatcatcher.
