Didn’t Polish immigrants pour their heart and soul into building this? Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church stands before us. It is a testament to faith and Polish heritage. Let’s delve into the story of this Detroit landmark.

Sweetest Heart of Mary is not just any church. It’s the only one in the world with this unique name. Dedicated on Christmas Eve in 1893, its first mass was a midnight celebration. It quickly became a symbol of the Polish community.

In the 19th century, Polish immigrants sought solace and community. They established Sweetest Heart of Mary. Father Dominic Hippolytus Kolasinski led this effort. He was a key figure in Detroit’s Polish community. Trouble arose within St. Albertus Parish. Kolasinski formed Sweetest Heart of Mary outside the Detroit Diocese in 1888.

Construction began on the Sweetest Heart of Mary in 1890. Spier and Rohns designed this Gothic Revival masterpiece. The cornerstone was laid in 1892. The church was officially dedicated on December 24, 1893. Over 10,000 people attended the dedication. The construction cost over 125,000 dollars.

The architecture is stunning. The red brick and Berea sandstone facade is impressive. Twin towers soar 218 feet high. They reflect the Gothic Revival style. Inside, the church seats over 2,000 people. The white oak altar reaches 60 feet into the dome.

The stained glass windows tell stories. The Holy Family window shows Jesus working with Joseph. Mary watches on. This window won an award at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Another window depicts St. Valentine. He blesses children. These windows were crafted by Detroit Stained Glass Works and Wells Glass Co.

The original pews still stand. They are carved with swirling ends and Gothic arches. The 1893 Austin organ fills the space with music. It is the oldest working Austin organ. It was restored in 1977.

Sweetest Heart of Mary became a Michigan Historic Site in 1974. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. A state historical marker was erected in 1981. In 2013, the church joined with St. Josephat. Together, they formed Mother of Divine Mercy Parish.

Today, Sweetest Heart of Mary continues Polish traditions. The Pierogi Festival draws thousands. Masses include Polish prayers and hymns. The church displays over 100 relics. They connect the present to the past.

Sweetest Heart of Mary stands as a testament to faith. It embodies the spirit of Detroit’s Polish immigrants. It honors Mary with the sweetest of hearts. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty around us. Remember the rich history within these walls.
