“Universal harmony.” That’s what Swami Vivekananda envisioned for Belur Math. This vision resonates deeply here at the Swami Vivekananda Temple.
This temple stands as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment. It draws devotees from across the globe. The Swami Vivekananda Temple is more than just a religious site. It represents unity and peace.
Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission. Belur Math serves as its headquarters. He was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The temple lies on the west bank of the Hooghly River. It is a vital institution in Kolkata.
The architecture embodies the harmony of all religions. Hindu. Islamic. Buddhist. Christian. Each style blends seamlessly here. It symbolizes a universal approach to spirituality.
In 1898 Swami Vivekananda consecrated the grounds. He used sacred relics of his guru. He spent his final years here. His presence still permeates the air.
The temple is dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna. It is the centerpiece of Belur Math. The temple’s design incorporates elements from various faiths. You will see Hindu temple features. Buddhist cave designs. Christian church components. Islamic mosque aspects.
Smaller temples honor Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. These remind us of their spiritual legacies. The room where Swamiji attained Mahasamadhi is preserved. Ma Sarda Devi also visited this sacred place often.
Swami Premananda wanted Swami Vivekananda’s ancestral home purchased. He wanted a Shiva temple with a prayer hall and library established there. He also wanted daily prayer. He envisioned devotional songs and meditation. He planned readings from scriptures and lectures regularly. Swami Premananda wished for a gymnasium too. He wanted students to easily visit from schools and colleges.
The monks and devotees keenly felt the need. They wanted a memorial at Swami Vivekananda’s birthplace. But concrete steps were not taken until 1963. This was Swami Vivekananda’s Birth Centenary year. The Government of West Bengal decided to establish a memorial institution.
In 1993 Ramakrishna Mission decided to solve the problem. They negotiated directly with the tenants. The court agreed. Ramakrishna Mission provided alternative accommodations. The state Government acquired the building. They handed it over to the Ramakrishna Mission in 1999.
The site had become a slum. Clearing the structures was a huge task. The Ramakrishna Mission bought land. They built a six-storied building. They purchased more flats. All tenants received alternative housing.
Ramakrishna Mission restored Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House. They did not change any original features. The Archaeological Survey of India assisted. The same materials from the 18th-century construction were used. The restored ancestral house became the Heritage Building.
The then Vice-President laid the foundation stone in 2001. The then General Secretary inaugurated the Monks’ Quarters in 2004. Revered Swami Ranganathanandaji declared open the restored Ancestral House in 2004. Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Cultural Complex in 2004.
The Swami Vivekananda Temple complex now houses several institutions. These include Vivekananda Museum. There is a Text Book Library and Seminar Hall. You’ll also find the Vivekananda Research Centre. The Slum Development and Philanthropic Activities Centre are here too.
