Ever wondered how the maize flour that sustains so many Tanzanians gets made? Here at Swalehe Milling Machine, we grind maize into flour, a daily necessity for many families. Swalehe Milling Machine sits on Olimatejo A street, right in the heart of Arusha City Council in the Sakina ward. It’s a privately owned milling machine, constantly humming with activity. We mainly produce maize flour here, unfortified but essential nonetheless. We’re open six days a week, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and even on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, from 8:30 am to 7 pm, grinding away to meet the demands of the community. While Tanzania has the potential to be the breadbasket of East Africa with its vast land, our maize production unfortunately declined in 2022/23. Factors like drought and high fertilizer prices have affected output. Tanzania relies heavily on smallholder farmers, who represent over 90% of maize production, making them especially vulnerable to these challenges. This scarcity impacts places like Swalehe Milling Machine, where we depend on a steady supply of maize. Despite the broader challenges, here at Swalehe Milling Machine, we work diligently, grinding maize into flour, contributing our small part to feed Tanzania. We might not be as big as some of the major milling groups in the country, but we serve a vital function here in Arusha.
