The year is 1959. A brand new school stands tall in Svedala. Centralskolan is its name a symbol of progress in this vibrant community.

Svedala kommun is more than just a municipality. It’s a place with a rich history. Its current form is a result of many mergers. The final merger happened in the 1970s. There were even discussions about adding Svedala to Malmo. But Svedala remained its own unique entity.

The growth of Svedala was fueled by the arrival of the railways in 1874 and 1875. These lines transformed Svedala into a railway junction. Industries flourished attracting people and leading to expansion. One of the largest employers was Sandvik SRP formerly known as Svedala Arbra. Its roots go back to 1882 founded by Abjorn Anderson and others. This company had a huge impact on Svedala’s growth.

But Svedala wasn’t only about industry. Trade and craftsmanship also thrived. Storgatan became the heart of Svedala’s business district. Shops like Gerda Granellis fashion store and Lars P Lindebergs watch shop thrived. Johan Josefsson a German merchant opened Svedala’s first shop in 1856. He sold textiles and yarn. His small general store continued under different owners until 1974.

Local artisans also contributed to Svedala’s character. August Liljekvists Svedala Karrl och kakelugnsfabrik produced renowned pottugnar (tile stoves) from 1860. The region’s excellent clay was ideal for their production. The factory expanded in 1870 but eventually closed when central heating became more popular.

Even education has a long history in Svedala. In 1555 the church bell ringer began to teach the catechism. He visited various villages instructing children and youth. A formal school system arrived in 1777. The first schools were built in 1806 teaching reading writing and arithmetic.

Centralskolan is a testament to Svedala’s commitment to education. Its construction involved detailed planning. The design was completed in 1954. Minnesbergs Tegelbruks AB supplied the bricks. The school cost 2.8 million kronor. A piece of art by Edvin Ohrstrom is embedded in one of its walls.

Svedala’s story is a blend of industry commerce and community spirit. It is a place that embraces its past and looks to the future. Svedala kommun a place of progress and tradition. A place worth exploring.
