Have you noticed the rare architecture right here at Wat Svay Pope? This Theravada Buddhist temple stands as a testament to Cambodian history and resilience. Wat Svay Pope was built in 1929. It has seen political turmoil and architectural debate.

Wat Svay Pope’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. In 2002, it became a refuge for 100 poor people from Kampong Speu province. They were later chased away. They sought shelter at the headquarters of political opponent Sam Rainsy. This event turned the pagoda into a stage for political drama.

Years later, in 2016, Sam Rainsy planned to return to Cambodia. He wanted to attend his mother-in-law’s cremation at Wat Svay Pope. His request to Prime Minister Hun Sen went unanswered. He remained in exile.

In 2021, controversy struck Wat Svay Pope again. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts approved the demolition of the 92-year-old temple. The pagoda’s chief monk requested it. Inspections revealed heavy damage and structural unsoundness. Some architects protested. They argued that this rare Buddhist structure should be preserved. The demolition proceeded despite concerns. The Ministry issued a statement after criticism arose.

Look around at the architecture of Wat Svay Pope. It is rare among post-Angkorian Buddhist structures. You can see golden bell-shaped stupas in front of the pagoda. To the north is a modern dark red four-story building. The library and monks’ dormitory stand as older buildings.

Wat Svay Pope is also home to the Preah Sihamoni Raja Buddhist College. Samedech Bour Kry founded it in 2005. He is the Supreme Patriarch of Thommayut Buddhist Order. The college provides higher Buddhist studies to monks. It has two departments: Buddhism and Administration. The college admits 100 monk students.

Wat Svay Pope is on Sothearos Street. It is in front of the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The pagoda is about 100 meters from the Aeon Mall.

Wat Svay Pope is more than a temple. It is a landmark that has witnessed political events. It sparked architectural debates. It is a place of learning and reflection. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Consider its place in Phnom Penh’s cultural landscape.
