Suyu-dong’s story begins long ago. During the Joseon dynasty, this area was known as Suyu Village. Back then it was part of Goyang County.
In 1949 Suyu-dong became part of Seongbuk District. A year later in 1950 it changed from a village to a neighborhood. This marked a key step in its urban development.
The name Suyu-dong has an interesting origin. It comes from the Korean words for water and overflowing. This is because the area often flooded due to the nearby Mountain Triangle. People even called it Muneomi which means water overflowing.
The area around Suyu-dong also has other names. Bbalae-gol means washing clothes hill. The story goes that excess water from Samgaksan Mountain created a place where people could wash clothes. Even palace maids came here to do their laundry.
Another name is Gao-ri meaning five more ri. During the Joseon dynasty, Seoul’s city wall defined the capital area. Gao-ri extended five ri beyond this limit.
In 2008 Suyu-dong went through administrative changes. The original six Suyu-dongs were divided into smaller areas. These became Insu-dong Ui-dong and Suyu-dong. The Suyu 1 Dong Community Service Center now serves the newly defined Suyu-dong.
Today Suyu-dong offers a mix of traditional and modern life. You can find local markets and hiking trails in Bukhansan National Park. These provide a taste of Korean culture and natural beauty.
