Did you ever imagine an airport being built on a former cobra swamp? This, my friends, is Suvarnabhumi Airport. You might know it as the main international airport serving Bangkok. But before it became this bustling hub, it was a place called Nong Nguhao which means “Cobra Swamp”. The story of Suvarnabhumi Airport is a long and fascinating one. It’s a story of ambition, perseverance and a touch of superstition. The need for a new airport was recognized as early as 1973. That’s when the Thai government bought a huge piece of land east of Bangkok. The land was, you guessed it, the notorious Cobra Swamp. The name “Suvarnabhumi” however has a much older and grander history. It comes from Sanskrit and means “Land of Gold”. It refers to a mythical kingdom believed to be in Southeast Asia. This glorious name for the airport was chosen by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. But building an airport on a swamp is no easy feat. And building an airport with such a name adds a certain weight of expectation. The project faced numerous setbacks. Budget overruns, construction flaws and even allegations of corruption plagued the early stages. Construction officially began in 2002, almost 30 years after the land was purchased. Then came another hurdle, a supernatural one this time. The airport was built on an old graveyard. Superstitious construction workers claimed to have seen ghosts. The airport authority even held a ceremony with 99 Buddhist monks chanting to appease the spirits. Finally, on 28 September 2006, Suvarnabhumi Airport officially opened. It replaced Don Mueang Airport as Bangkok’s main international gateway. But the troubles didn’t end there. The first few days were chaotic with baggage handling issues, flight delays and system failures. Later, cracks appeared in the runways and some passenger boarding bridges were found to be damaged. For a time, Don Mueang Airport had to be reopened to handle the traffic while Suvarnabhumi underwent repairs. Today, Suvarnabhumi Airport has overcome its early challenges and become one of the busiest and most important airports in Southeast Asia. It’s a modern marvel, a testament to Thailand’s ambition and resilience. And though the ghosts of Nong Nguhao may still linger in the shadows, Suvarnabhumi Airport stands tall, a gleaming symbol of the “Land of Gold”.
