“Ever wondered where Kuala Lumpur’s Prime Minister seeks solace?” That’s Surau An-Najah. It is a place where community and faith intertwine.
Surau An-Najah stands near Sekolah Rendah Agama Al-Najah. The surau occupies a 1.617-hectare lot. It was officially registered with Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan on May 5, 2011. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato’ Seri Jamil Khir bin Haji Baharom, inaugurated Surau An-Najah on June 23, 2011.
The building spans 5000 square feet. It accommodates around 400 worshipers inside. Another 200 can gather outside the prayer hall. The management planned renovations. They wanted to enclose the outer prayer area with glass walls. This aimed to enhance the comfort for worshipers.
Surau An-Najah also wanted to construct an additional building. This building would house Muslim studies. They also needed a new PA system. These upgrades would benefit 600 worshipers. This includes those in the outer areas. Teachers and students from Sekolah Rendah Agama An-Najah would also gain a comfortable space. They could conduct practical activities for Islamic education.
In July 2024, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim performed Friday prayers with the community at Surau An-Najah. He arrived around 12:45 PM. Zainal Mohd Yusof, the Koperasi An-Najah Secretary, greeted him. Dozens of students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 9(2) also welcomed him.
Ustaz Hazim Malim led the prayers. Over 1,000 worshipers participated. Anwar and the congregation listened to a sermon. Ustaz Hazim Malim delivered it. It was titled “Perihal Mizan.” It discussed the weighing of deeds in the afterlife.
After prayers, Anwar socialized with the attendees. He also took photos before leaving. Earlier, Anwar enjoyed lunch at the Surau An-Najah food stalls. He sampled local dishes. These included fried tempeh, fried bananas and cutlet chicken.
Surau An-Najah is more than a prayer space. It is a community hub. It is a place where leaders and locals connect. It’s where faith strengthens community bonds. Its story reflects Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant religious life.
