Superintendent James Harvey Tomb spearheaded a move to a larger ship and land-based campus. The Procyon became the Empire State. This doubled the school’s capacity.
In 1938 the college found a permanent home. It moved to Fort Schuyler on the Throggs Neck peninsula. This magnificent site was once a vital part of the nation’s defenses. The Works Progress Administration restored the fort. This ensured the college could function properly.
The college continued to evolve. It gained degree-granting status in 1946. In 1948 it joined the State University of New York system. It became SUNY Maritime College in 1949.
Today SUNY Maritime College offers a range of majors. Students earn USCG licenses. They prepare for careers in the maritime industry. The college also houses a Navy ROTC program.
