Sunway Pyramid opened in July 1997. Sunway Group developed it. Nelson Yong designed it. He was Sunway’s design director. Other architects could not meet the expectations for the facade. Yong stepped up. He sketched the iconic lion head and pyramid. He roughly designed the building’s facade. This happened after a meeting with Sunway’s chairman, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah.
Originally, the lion statue was intended to be a man’s face. It was to resemble the chairman of Sunway Group. But the government rejected this idea. They cited religious conflicts between ancient Egypt and modern Islam. So a lion’s face was chosen instead.
The architectural style is Egyptian Revival. A giant lion statue stands guard at the main entrance. It resembles the Great Sphinx of Giza. A large pyramid rises behind it.
In 2007, an expansion project called SP2 increased the retail space. It went from 886000 square feet to 1656000 square feet. From October to December 2011, the Canopy Walk Extension Phase 3 improved the northeast dining zone. It is now known as Oasis Boulevard East. Another expansion, SP3, finished in 2015. It added 62000 square feet of retail space. This area is now Sunway Pyramid West. An air-conditioned bridge connects it to the main complex.
Sunway Pyramid features many stores and services. There are over 900. These include Jaya Grocer, Marks & Spencer and Parkson. You can also find TGV Cinemas and Sunway Lagoon. Other stores include Brands Outlet, Padini Concept Store, H&M and Uniqlo. There is also Max Fashion, Daiso and MUJI. Ace Hardware, Jonetz by Don Don Donki and Kaison are present too. Toys R Us, POPULAR and Harvey Norman are here as well. You can find Sunway Pyramid Ice Skating Rink and The Parenthood here. Brands For Less and Sports Direct are also in Sunway Pyramid.
In November 2024, a reconfigured retail space opened. It is themed “The Oasis”. It replaced the space that AEON previously occupied. The Oasis now houses several tenants. These include a LEGO store and a tech megastore named TMT. A Brands for Less outlet and a MUJI department store also reside here. The MUJI store is the largest in Malaysia. Oasis Avenue replaced the former AEON supermarket. It houses new dining spots. DIN by Din Tai Fung and TORII Teppanyaki are present. Dandy, VCR, Burger King, and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are also here. The Jaya Grocer anchor tenant is also in Oasis Avenue. It used to be in the basement level.
The mall has several zones. These include Asian Avenue, Fashion Central and Marrakesh. The Orange, Blue, and Green Zones offer diverse experiences. The Red Zone and The Link add to the variety. Oasis and Terrace are other zones. Terrace is slated for completion in 2025.
Sunway Pyramid is easily accessible. The SB03 Sunway Lagoon BRT station connects to the mall. The KD08 Setia Jaya station or KJ31 USJ 7 station are also nearby. A dedicated ramp from the New Pantai Expressway leads to the car park. The parking lot accommodates 10000 cars. It uses a ticketless and cashless system.
Canopy Walk is an elevated walkway network. It links the mall to nearby landmarks. These include Sunway University and Sunway Lagoon. It also connects to Monash University Malaysia. The Eco Walk links the mall to Sunway Pinnacle.
The Link is a retail and dining zone. It connects Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Sunway Resort Hotel. Esteemed restaurants are here. Din Tai Fung and Haidilao Hot Pot are present.
