Have you ever imagined life on a ranch in the heart of Texas, a time when milk straight from the farm was a treasured treat? Sunshine Ranch Plaque tells the story of just such a place, a place that provided not only delicious dairy products, but also a taste of rural life just outside the bustling city of San Antonio. This plaque, tucked away on the southwest corner of Babcock Road and Saint Cloud Road, marks the site of Sunshine Ranch, a property that was known throughout the San Antonio area for its high-quality milk, cream, and other dairy products.

The ranch was founded in 1905, when Willie Maverick gifted 173 acres of land to his nephew, Albert, and his wife, Jane. Jane, a woman known for her vision and her love of the sunshine, gave the property its name. The family built a magnificent home on the hill, designed by renowned architect Alfred Giles, a testament to their wealth and standing in society. But it wasn’t just a home; it was a center of activity.

The eighth of their eleven children, Jim Maverick, had a passion for cattle, a passion he cultivated after graduating from the University of Wisconsin, where he learned about the finest dairy breeds. He returned to San Antonio and established the Sunshine Dairy in 1917. He stressed cleanliness, which was a rarity at the time, and his dairy products became highly sought-after. Sunshine Ranch was known for its purebred Jersey and Holstein cattle, and their milk, cream, cottage cheese, butter cream, and soft curd milk were sold both at the ranch and delivered throughout San Antonio. The milk was even used to produce ice cream in Joske’s department stores.

Sunshine Ranch wasn’t just a business, though. It was a community, a place where eleven houses were built for employees, most of Mexican descent. The Maverick family lived nearby, and visitors were welcomed to experience the rural dairy farm life. However, in 1955, the city of San Antonio annexed the property. Maverick auctioned off his herd and sold his beloved ranch, marking the end of an era. He retired with his wife, Hazel, and Sunshine Ranch became a subdivision.

Today, all that remains of the Sunshine Ranch is this plaque, a reminder of a time when milk came from the farm and rural life was a key part of the San Antonio experience. In its own way, the plaque tells a vibrant story of a bygone era, a story of family, business, and community. And it’s a story worth remembering.
