The tranquility of Sunshine Bay was further highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many homes in the area, once rented out to tourists and tourism workers, stood empty. The once-popular bus service between Arrowtown and Sunshine Bay, favored by tourists, saw a significant drop in patronage. Yet, even amidst these challenges, Sunshine Bay retained its allure. In August 2020, a developer sought permission to build 200 new residential units here, a testament to the enduring appeal of this lakeside gem. Later that same month, several on-street car parks were removed from Arawata Terrace after a bus became stuck due to parked cars on both sides. This seemingly minor incident speaks to the delicate balance between development and preservation in this unique area. Sunshine Bay is a testament to the enduring power of nature.
