“Remember that feeling of excitement when you stepped into a brand new pair of shoes?” our guide asked, a twinkle in his eye. We were standing before the husk of Sunset Place, that once-bustling mall. “Sunset Place, in its heyday, offered that same thrill to Miami.” Opening in 1999, it replaced the short-lived Bakery Centre. Sunset Place arrived with a bang. It boasted trendy stores like Hollister, Gap, and even an Armani Exchange. A massive AMC theater loomed large, promising cinematic escapes. But like a pair of shoes worn too often, its shine began to fade. Despite the cobblestone streets and grand staircase, Sunset Place struggled to connect with the soul of South Miami. The lack of local flavor and the changing tides of retail trends led to its decline. By the 2020s, it stood nearly vacant, a ghost of its former glory. Today, however, a new chapter is being written. Demolition looms, making way for a vibrant urban village. Soon, over 1,000 residential units, a hotel, and a mix of buzzing businesses will breathe new life into this space. Sunset Place might be fading into memory, but its legacy will pave the way for a brighter, more integrated future for South Miami.
