Did you ever hear of a church built from scraps of another? Right here, at Sunrise Southern Baptist Church, stands a testament to the power of resourcefulness and faith. Sunrise Southern Baptist Church began not in a grand edifice, but as a mission of Nellis Baptist Church in 1957. A survey revealed a burgeoning community of 4,000 souls near the current location, with limited spiritual guidance. The church officially joined the Southern Baptist Convention in 1958, starting humbly in a carpenter’s shop. This makeshift space, lacking even basic amenities, hosted the 36 charter members. They soon moved to a storefront in Nellis Plaza, seeking a more suitable space. In 1959, the church purchased land at the corner of Betty and Kell, utilizing a small, dilapidated building for two years. Imagine, benches placed outside to accommodate the overflow of worshippers, eager to hear the word. The church then acquired the Little Theater building in Boulder City for a mere $1.02. This structure, carefully dismantled and transported 25 miles, became the foundation of their first real church building, completed in 1962. Sunrise Southern Baptist Church even shrewdly expanded their property to six acres by paying off past-due taxes on adjacent parcels. With a $20,000 grant from the Home Mission Board, the church secured its financial footing, supporting its pastor and further construction. So, as you stand before Sunrise Southern Baptist Church today, remember its humble beginnings. It reminds us that faith, determination, and a bit of ingenuity can build something truly special.
