Sunnyside’s story begins long ago with the Bragaw family French Huguenots who settled here in 1713 naming their estate Sunnyside Hill. The area was once a rural hamlet dotted with small farms and marshland. The construction of the Queensboro Bridge in 1909 transformed Sunnyside. It quickly became a popular bedroom community for Manhattan workers.

Today Sunnyside boasts a stunning array of architectural styles. Six-story apartment buildings from the 1920s and 30s stand alongside charming Victorian homes. Sunnyside Gardens a planned community built between 1924 and 1928 is a remarkable example of early 20th-century urban planning. It was one of the first developments in the United States inspired by the garden city movement.

The Madison Square Garden Bowl a massive outdoor arena once stood in Sunnyside. It hosted famous boxing matches before closing in 1942. The Sunnyside Garden Arena a later boxing venue is now a Wendy’s.

Famous faces have graced Sunnyside’s streets. Actress Judy Holliday legendary jazz musician Bix Beiderbecke and even William Patrick Stuart-Houston Adolf Hitler’s nephew once lived here. The Ramones played their early gigs in Sunnyside pubs. Hap Moran the New York Giants star coached a youth football team here before World War II.
