What secrets does a river hold? Sungai Akar in Bandar Seri Begawan whispers tales of serpents and community spirit. Sungai Akar isn’t just a river; it’s a cornerstone of the local identity. Legend claims the river was once teeming with snakes. The Malay word “akar,” meaning root or vine, was used to describe these slithering creatures. So, Kampung Sungai Akar, or Sungai Akar village, was born. This name replaced the less appealing “Kampung Sungai Ular,” or River of Snakes village. Sungai Akar, nestled within Bandar Seri Begawan, is more than just a name; it’s a vibrant community. The population of Sungai Akar reached 5,467 in 2016. It’s a blend of tradition and modernity. It’s a place where you’ll find government offices like the Radio Television Brunei Department and the Land Transport Department. Schools like Freda Radin School, Stella School, and PGGMB School also call Sungai Akar home. The Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Mosque, inaugurated in 2013, stands as a testament to the community’s faith. It can accommodate 1,000 worshippers. The Sungai Akar Camp houses the Gurkha Reserve Unit, a nod to Brunei’s historical ties. Sungai Akar has also proven its resilience and compassion. In 2010, it won the Cleanliness and Beauty Contest. It also rallied to raise donations for the Indonesian earthquake and Philippine storm victims in 2009. Even the Muslim women of the Sungai Akar mosque showcased their talents. They won the Murattal Al-Quran team competition in 2015. Sungai Akar isn’t just a place; it’s a story. It’s a story of community, resilience, and faith. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of Bandar Seri Begawan.
